Due to regular maintenance now taking place on the roadways in Koh Phangan driving conditions are vastly improved compared to previous years. However, there are still some sections of road that can be difficult to navigate for inexperienced drivers so always drive with care. Please check out the below information for some helpful tips on driving in Koh Phangan and to familiarise yourself with the rules of the road.
The rules of the road are the same across the Kingdom of Thailand however driving on the island is very different to driving in a major city such as Bangkok. The maximum speed limit is 60km per hour but there are very few places on the island where driving at such speed would be appropriate. As the island is relatively small and there are some steep hills and winding roads driving at speed would be dangerous and with many other tourists and locals driving on motorbikes you put yourself at risk of causing a serious accident . The laid back relaxed feel of the island should be reflected in your driving style theres no need to drive fast. The views and scenery are spectacular so driving slowly will give you the best opportunity to appreciate your surroundings during your journey. Extra care should be taken on the main southern road between Thong Sala and Haad Rin, as this is a popular area for nightlife and as such there are many tourist walking drunk in the street and possibly intoxicated tourists on scooters and motorbikes so please be aware and take care.
Always be aware of other vehicles on the road especially at night when visibility is poor as there is often no lightning on the streets. During busy hours there can be many scooters and motorbikes on the road that are often ridden by inexperienced tourists. Some of the local drivers such as Taxis may be driving fast along the roads far in excess off the speed limit to try to get to another location quickly so they can increase the number of journeys they can do that day. Therefore its advisable that youre able to stop quickly which isnt possible at high speeds. You should always try to keep as far to the left as you can this will give more room to vehicles coming from the opposite direction and allow motorbikes to safely pass.
You need to remain alert at all times but especially at night some roads are unlit and youll need to stay focused to respond to other vehicles, pedestrians and dogs which have a tendency to run out into the road in front of cars and bikes. Driving at a reasonable speed is the best option to avoid these issues.
Whilst the roads in Koh Phangan have been modernised in recent years, it is still not possible to drive around the entire island along the coast as you can on Koh Samui. Make sure you check your map and plan your route before you embark on any journey here and note that the furthest northern point you can drive to is Haad Khom, near Chaloklum, and there is only one road that will take you as far east as Thong Nai Pan. Then there are other places, such as Bottle Beach, which can only be reached by boat or on foot.
